Do-It-Yourself Background Checks| Bad Idea for Employers

Background Screening

Running a successful business can prove to be quite a challenge. Whether it is owning a restaurant or managing a law firm, a business can prove to be a time-consuming and costly experience. This is why hiring ideal employees is a crucial part of any business. The right employees will improve productivity and efficiency — often the difference between increasing revenue or losing money. It is recommended you perform the necessary pre-employment background checks necessary to find the best candidate for the position needed at your business. Hiring new employees is not a cakewalk — it is a long, expensive and daunting process. Many times, business owners have little information on best practices for hiring employees and will make mistakes that can lead to financial or legal problems.

The Importance of Background Checks

We at Origin understand that you have a business to run and that your time is valuable. You probably don’t have the time to keep up-to-date on the latest hiring procedures and laws while running a business that needs your focus elsewhere. Many businesses conduct their own background checks for various reasons, such as saving time and money or because they’ve done them in the past.  Unfortunately, often times they are incorrect, and the businesses end up in unsatisfactory situations that could be easily avoided if they’d simply hired a reliable third-party company.

Conducting your own employment background checks is not a good idea for multiple reasons. To start, it is imperative to stay complaint and up to date with applicable laws. Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), any information reported must be complete, up to date, and only contain convictions within the last seven years. If you use a case that was closed ten years ago, as means for adverse action, you would be in violation with the FCRA. The FCRA defines taking adverse action as “a denial of employment or any other decision for employment purposes that adversely affects any current or prospective employee.” In addition to the FCRA, you need to review applicable laws of your state regarding background reports because some states regulate the use of that information for employment determinations.

It is always in your company’s best interest to understand the importance of background checks and why, to save both time and potential hassle, you should not perform these tests on your own. Nowadays, hiring a person is not as simple as looking at their resume and scheduling an interview.

There are many tests that must be conducted before a job applicant is hired. These include reviewing identity verification, litigation records, education verification, medical records, drug tests, employment history, criminal history and worker’s compensation records, just to list a few.

Knowing When to Seek a Screening Company

The number of tests and verifications that must be conducted may seem overwhelming, but in order to find the best candidate, they must all be performed. With many years of experience, Origin knows the importance of such tests, as there is always the possibility of a job applicant lying on their resume or records. If you decide to perform these tests on your own, then you risk hiring an applicant who is not qualified for the job. This can have a negative impact on your company and can even damage your company’s reputation. Many companies also have little to no information or knowledge on the most current laws regarding hiring applicants. A simple question can land your business in hot water if you are unaware of what an employer can ask job applicants in an interview.
